'Nimbu Mirchi' Nazar Battu Bag Tag // Lime Chili Evil Eye Charm
In India, we are surrounded by the most interesting little design details that usually stem from very logical reasons, but along the way turn into myths and other symbolisms and sometimes vice-versa.
Here is a ‘chili-nimbu nazar battu’ // lime and chili to ward off evil. Many businesses, homes, even cars and trucks across the country hang real lime and chili bunches in their spaces. It started off from people hanging them outside their homes as disinfectants, but over the years it turned into a symbol to ward off evil. It was also said that when people travelled, they carried lime and chili’s. The lime was to prevent dehydration, so they would squeeze it in the water and have it. And the chilis were to check if a snake bite was poisonous or not if they ever got struck by one. If they felt the heat in the mouth, it wasn’t poisonous and if they didn’t feel any sensation, it was.
What is true and what isn’t, we are not too sure, but what we do know is this little charm, has turned out so cute.
Hang it on your bag or use it at a keychain and keep away all those envious eyes.
